It's no wonder this book has been nominated for the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics. The recognition is well deserved. Starting with the introduction letter, Closer to Heaven is beautiful on all levels (writing, art, color, editing, production) & is one of my all-time favorite reads. It makes me feel young and mature at the same time. It's also a perfect gift.

Andre the Giant: Closer to Heaven by Brandon Easton et. al. is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in an early Thursday morning before work. I was given this graphic novel to read in the luck of a draw, since I had Wished to read it by clicking on a wishbone icon some months ago.
This book is incredibly fluent, expressed, ruminating, and detailed in Andre's internal monologue as he wanders through a busy sepia world. Its length and breadth works to clear rumors, place stories on the correct track, and show real thought and strategy to Andre's decisions.

This is a fine piece of graphic non-fiction

Given the fact that his life was one lived mostly in the public eye, Andre the Giant is a figure about whom most people probably think there's nothing to learn. He was a wrestler, he was huge, he was in "The Princess Bride," and he died. What's to know?
Plenty, as writer Brandon Easton (an Eisner nominee for his work on the stunning thriller comic series WATSON AND HOLMES) and artist Denis Medri join their considerable skills for a sensitive, well-structured, and smartly conceived graphic biography of a larger-than-life life. Writing in the first person, Easton evokes the sensitivity, frustration, and desire for acceptance that drove Andre to both personal danger and professional glory. Medri's understatedly emotional artwork, rendered in subtle, earthy tones, captures the grandeur of Andre's physicality while granting him something the wrestling world wasn't always able to: His full, vulnerable humanity.
This is a fine piece of graphic non-fiction, an illuminating look at an under-understood life, and just a hell of a fine read.
