War is Stupid and Senseless

I'm Westen Nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front), some would maintain, is the iconic book on WWI. No book describes better the grisly scenes that typified the common soldier's life, death and routine - much of it in the trenches located between France and Germany, where Remarque served. Early editing of the book, deemed necessary to promote book sales, created some confusion as to what message Remarque was actually trying to convey to the reader. In this final version, however, it is clear that the book is a diatribe against the stupidity and senselessness of war. Consequently, the book was subsequently banned in Nazi Germany, where they were promoting war, and Remarque had to take up residence abroad. Remarque enjoyed a very successful career as a writer after the war, but in his book he dwells at length on his expectation - later borne out - that most participants in WWI would never ever recover from their wartime experiences - mental and physical - that instead they would become members of a 'lost generation'. All Quiet on the Western Front

The German war novel -- some would say anti-war novel due to its honest depiction of war -- that sparked an English-language translation as well as two US films (1930 and 1979, the first of which is an Oscar award winning film) and has elicited everything from laudation to vituperation from host upon host of people. My recommendation is to read it for yourself rather than relying on second-hand opinions, and also to read it in the original German which does not suffer from any of the oddities of every English-language version I've seen.

This item is not what you think it is

Be warned: This item is NOT the famous novel by Erich Maria Remarque. Rather, it's a "graphic novel" based on Remarque's novel. This is not made clear in the Amazon listing. I had to return my copy after waiting days for its delivery. Be sure the item you order under the title "Im Westen Nichts Neues" is really the novel by Remarque himself.
