Treasure trove of Otomo's art
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo2EV614FHR0A9G]]This is the companion artbook to the GENGA exhibition that was held in April & May 2012. The exhibition featured over 3000 pages of manga from Otomo Katsuhiro's 39 years of career since 1973.
This is a large 256-page paperback measuring 10 by 14 inches. That's larger that all the other Otomo Katsuhiro artbooks I've seen.
While there are some new and unpublished artwork, some have also appeared in other books such as KABA, KABA2, Akira Club, The Memory of Memories, ビバ・イル・チクリッシモ! (VIVA IL CICLISSIMO!) and possibly others. All those artbooks are quite expensive to ship from Japan.
The manga art are printed satisfyingly huge. The scans and reproduction are great. You can see how words are pasted onto the speech bubbles, the details of the ink work and hatching lines and painted illustrations. The format is large enough to show off all the meticulous work put into drawing those panels.
If you have other artbooks, I think this is still a great addition.

This book is huge!
By Matthew A. Steven
You're going to need a 15" tall shelf in your bookshelf to fit this sucker in! This is the biggest (though not the fattest) book I have ever seen! And, it consists of about 250 pages.
As for the content, the enormous size of the book allows plenty of space for some very clean images. Almost every page has multiple pictures on it, laid out in various grid formats, almost like manga panels (but not a continuous story). The book starts with his earliest works from 1973 and ends at 2004, progressing chronologically, with interviews in between. Each section has an equal focus, which means Akira isn't dominating the book. Akira is in its own section for the respective years he was working on it which is the same size as any other section. The content is mostly ink drawings (some with screentones) and a few color pages here and there.
Everything is in Japanese (except the index has English), but what I thought was really nice was they included a magazine-sized booklet stuffed right in the middle of the book that has English translations of all the interviews and such. Nice job! Though, it's funny they could fit a magazine inside of this monster of a book.
I can't say much else besides the fact that this stuff is great inspiration. His background work is just incredible and it's hard to believe just how much he's drawn in high-level detail in all of his years.

Possibly the best Otomo Katsuhiro art book out there.

It's true, what many of you have heard - Otomo's catalogue for his Genga Exhibition is even more wicked than his latest art book Kaba 2 - Kaba 2 By Otomo Katsuhiro Artwork 1990-2011 Illustration Collection. From cover to cover, its a grand celebration of artist's 39 years of superfluous art work.
To begin, check out how this monster trumps even Otomo's own giant art book Kaba in sheer size and volume. ( please visit my blog for the pictures - the link is found via my Amazon profile link )
And now to address a question that many Otomo fans have been asking - how much content is actually as yet unpublished art work ? From a cursory browsing of the book, my guesstimation is that most of the art work contained within have been published in one form or another.
This I am pretty certain with regards to the 2nd half of the book, because they are relatively more "recent" work which I am more or less familiar with; but the content in the first half of the book ( images below ) are really old work which will be much harder to track down I think. ( Otomo experts out there, please correct me if I'm wrong. )
All that said, there are 2 things that are worth mentioning.
The first is that even though many of the art work aren't new, its the first time they are presented in their "raw" and unvarnished form, uncropped too, lending a pristine quality to the work. It's as if Otomo himself dug out all his original pieces of art work, stacked them in a neat and tidy pile and then diligently reproduced them with a giant flatbed scanner.
Which is probably how it was done, only it was a couple of his jimusho (office) staff slogging away and not him, no offence intended sir. )
The 2nd is size - the prints are humongous and delicately reproduced, the colors vibrant and eye-popping, the sharpness spot on and crisp. One might need to inspect the book in person to tell the real difference, but its definitely there.
I don't think Otomo fans will want to miss out on this one. It's a good thing Amazon Japan is selling it, which makes the book available to his fans all over the world. And because I won't have to lug this big and heavy book all the way back home after the exhibition.
Highly, highly recommended.
