About the Author
Steven R. Selengut, MBA, RIA, has been in the financial services industry for more than forty years. He started investing while employed in a life insurer's pension investment department. This is the book I should have read first

What I have to say sounds pretty outrageous, but its all completely true with no exaggeration.

* This book turns the risk/reward correlation on its head - higher reward is actually correlated with lower risk with this approach.
* Higher income from bonds than stocks by using leveraged Closed-end funds!
* Trading blue chips stocks to get consistent year after year 20% returns!
* Selecting winning trades in minutes!
* A winner to loser trade ratio exceeding 20 to 1!
* Managing a portfolio with no more stress than balancing a checkbook!
* A system that mananges cash levels automatically!
* An entry/exit system that generates patience and confidence!
* Consistent month after month returns - all positive compounding!
* Positive results in bull, bear, or sideways markets.

Oh, and sucess without constantly monitoring the market outlook. I had to stop watching the Wall street TV shows that I'd become addicted to as they were getting in the way of making money.

The approach requires effort to learn and practice to coordinate the parts (but the author runs online seminars) and it does become second nature.

There are some things Mr Selengut could add to his next edition that are important to a person trying to adopt the system.
* How to transition a large portfolio patiently and prudently.
* A clearer explanation of how to sort out the better "channel trading stocks"
* How to avoid the failures in the rearward looking S&P ranking system.
* A similar mechanical system for selecting and trading CEFs
* A "Test drive" mini portfolio that can be tried using only a couple of CEFs and small number of equities, that can be used to prove the worth of the approach

I looked at the reviews that gave a low rating to this book and, not to criticize, I see that they did not grasp the most fundamental take-away that this book offers. That is the notion that in the increasingly volatile markets, you need to stop trying to control what you cannot and start focusing on what you can control. You control the growing level of income generation and the increasing size of the capital base that generates it. This is against what wall street preaches but it is what actually works in turning your portfolio into an annuity with a predictable high(20%) payout - and with minimal effort and the ability to sleep through anything that the market throws at us.

In the past forty years I went from mutual fund buy and hold, to active trading (now going on 20 years) and after two years with this system, I see that everything I previously learned was pretty much completely the opposite of what I needed to be doing. I was googling for information on closed-end funds when I found this book, and having the experience I had, I was struck by the truth of what the author was saying and decided to get a copy after studying the sample material. It took some months to actually get the system working right and I made a good number of mistakes but I see that they are nothing to panic over. Most of the holdings that are down now will most certainly come back over the next market cycle and I'm getting dividends that are far better than any bond interest. I only wish I had discovered this book sooner.

The best investment book I have read.

I have read my fair share of investment books. Most books contain allot of fluff and stories about things you really just don't care to read. You find yourself skipping paragraph after paragraph to find the information that maybe worth your time.

Mr. Selengut took me by surprise with his book. Every chapter was just fully packed with knowledge and real experience. You can tell this was written by someone who actually invested for a living. It will give you an all new perspective about Wall Street, the crap they sell, and how they are siphoning your hard earned dollars for there self gain.

In my opinion, this book will sink in much better with an experienced investor. I found myself saying "He's right" throughout the book. Mostly because I experienced these lessons first hand. At times I'd have to put the book down and do some research on my own. To truly grasp what the author was talking about. I finished this book with an arsenal of new knowledge and anyone who picks up a copy, will too. The book covers stocks, diffrent types of bonds, closed end funds, mutual funds, money management, asset allocation, profit taking, selection strategies, sector cycles, income, portfolio management, broker services, and Wall Street greed. He doesn't just brush on these topics, he goes into detail about them and how to manage them in a portfolio.

High turnover value investing

Steve Selengut is a RIA whom I became aware of while searching for an investment advisor a few years ago. I am not a client of his, nor acquainted with him. However I follow his investment articles on the internet.

Steve's investment strategy as presented in this book, I would describe as value investing with a high annual turnover as distinguished from buy-and-hold. He shows in this book that with a modest 10% profit target, and trading several times during the year, one can achieve an annual return of over 20%. One does not have to aim for '10 baggers' etc. He teaches investors to view their stock portfolio much as a business views its inventory - to be 'turned over' through sales. Those readers with a finance background may be familiar with the DuPont formula which shows that ROA can be increased by asset turnover. This is the same principle Selengut uses (although he doesn't call it the DuPont principle). It's an insightful approach and for me, is the great lesson of this book.

For risk management, he does not use market timing or stop-loss orders - he believes that by investing only in high S&P rated companies, one can manage losses. How does his strategy perform in bear markets? In Dec of 2010 he stated that his model equities portfolio had just recovered its Sept 2007 high (ie. after three years). Thus although not immune to losses, this portfolio recovered its losses more quickly than a passive index-fund portfolio for the same period. However the high trading frequency with this strategy would also incur higher costs. I wonder how that would affect the net return, compared to a passive strategy.

Prose-wise, the book is rather wordy, and takes effort to get through. It lacks a summary chapter in which the author's investment strategy is outlined in one place. Instead the investment strategy is laid out piecemeal throughout the entire book. You have to do quite a lot of reading to "get it". Nevertheless, this book provides an approach to high-turnover investing that I have never seen explained anywhere else. Of all the books on investing that I have read, this is one of the few that truly challenges index investing.

DEATH OF A NATURALIST was Seamus Heaney's first published collection of poems. It appeared in 1966, when he was twenty-seven. Heaney grew up in a rural environment in Northern Ireland. Many of the poems, especially the early ones in the book, reflect that environment -- Heaney's love for it as well as his leave-taking of it. (Heaney was perhaps a little too squeamish to stay in the countryside, as reflected in the title poem.) Several poems deal with love and marriage. Most are personal; a few touch on larger matters, such as the Great Famine.

It is an impressive debut collection, worthy of a poet destined to be a Nobel Prize laureate. All of the poems have a formal structure, and many of them employ rhyme. There is one practice that I find overused: isolating a single word at the end of a line (the first word of the next sentence) or at the beginning of a line (the last word of the carry-over sentence). While few of the poems are profound or spark a desire to memorize, they all are comprehensible, almost all are engaging, and none are silly. Of the thirty-four poems, I marked nine to re-read at some indefinite time in the future, but I suspect that when I do pick up the book again I will re-read it in its entirety.

The longest poem covers three pages. The shortest is only nine lines. Entitled "Lovers on Aran" (the Aran Islands lie off the west coast of Ireland), here it is:

The timeless waves, bright, sifting, broken glass,
Came dazzling around, into the rocks,
Came glinting, sifting from the Americas

To possess Aran. Or did Aran rush
To throw wide arms of rock around a tide
That yielded with an ebb, with a soft crash?

Did sea define the land or land the sea?
Each drew new meaning from the waves' collision.
Sea broke on land to full identity.

How the Irish Hold Their Poets Holy

I began reading this first book of poetry by the Nobel Laureate from Ireland a few weeks ago. My wife and daughter were traveling on the Dingle Peninsula and stayed a few nights visiting Trinity College and drank pints of Guinness and Bushmills at the Temple Bar and witnessed the statues of James Joyce and Oscar Wilde in the greens of the great Gaelic capital. Ireland is an island which adores its poets, literary novelists and playwrights with a national ardor that I devoutly wish for my own country so immersed in commercial fare and cultural pap. Have you ever seen photos of the Library at Trinity College Dublin? It's where God goes to read on Sunday. I stayed at home to work and as the iPhone photos came in from Dublin, Galway, Coole, Adare and Dingle, I connected with my beloved family by reading the great Irish naturalist, Seamus Heaney. I finished this book without knowing that he had been so ill and he died the very next day. The timing of the death of this Nobel naturalist and my reading of him struck me as providentially uncanny. But what a magnificent literary legacy he leaves behind and one could see his prolific poetic gifts in this work, his first published collection which paints such a humble and humbling portrait of life among the farms and villages of rural Ireland. This is a hard life with grim realities. It's a life of tilling the boulder laden sod behind horses pulling a plough. Heaney writes about digging potatoes flashing white in soil from the spade and how blackberries ferment and turn green so soon after the picking. He writes about the ability of the Irish to endure great tempests blasting off the ocean. And about the grim business of shooting snipe at dawn. The writing is, at times, brutally frank in the way in which Robert Frost was later in life as a poet of the countryside of New England. Frost and Heaney had much in common in their respect and honest portraits of the simple life in the country. Both can bring vibrant images flying off the pages in 3D after only a few short, well chosen words. The writing is vivid, realistic, unsentimental and has the power to leave one stunned by the poet's discernment and rough sensibility at the conclusion of a poem. Some of this work is hard to read in a wince causing way because Heaney wants to show the reality of his existence as a naturalist with such gripping candor. At times, he almost seems intent upon sensationalism as in his poem about the drowning of kittens. I loved his poem about "The Trout" and his vision of the playwright Synge and lovers on the bare island of Aran. Heaney gives us a compelling portrait of a hard life in Ireland in his day. That he was destined to become a Nobel Laureate is evident from the beginning in this first collection. Pay homage to the great poet and read this work.

Please write more of this series! There are so many things that I want to know about!. I wondered why they didn't take a cow of each sex even if they were calves no matter how crammed that van was or opt for the 3rd van to charge. Did the poppies arrive intact to be used for medicine? Are they going to send Wisp and Nick to get the other brother? Will Nick meet and fall in love ever as he seems young enough and they want to have babies being born so it seems fitting that a rescue at some point will have the right damsel in distress. Will they find an abandoned library to get books from? This is a wonder in all post apocalyptic books that I have. Why don't they break into a library for books on medical training, farming, survival skills, the classics and teaching the children? What about the bad area they avoided on the way back after finding it on the way to find Nick.?

And I would love to see a map or two. Maybe done up as Angus writing it but a layout of the new land as they know it with settlements marked and one of the facility itself. Just a thought. I have stayed up late reading this after the first one and now I have to wait and hope for more!

The sad part of ebooks is the inability to get my book's signed by authors, but without it I probably would have never found your books. Please write more in the series and maybe that prequel suggestion I thought would be great as well.

Love this series!!!

Book 1 and 2 are really good. I am very excited to read the next book!! I love these characters and the biobots, especially Wisp. Now we were introduced to a few of his brothers and it just enhances the story. I can feel these people emotions and even visualize the scenario the author has described. A great job. I won't take a star away because of it but to have to wait a full YEAR for the 3rd installment is really depressing.

A beautifully crafted story about American Survivors.

Every day I get emails with free eBook offers. Many of them are free for a reason: weak story, characters, or dialog, badly written, and sometimes not worth finishing. But sometimes you get really, really lucky.

That's how I feel about the Changed World series. I got Book 1 for free, and read it compulsively in one day (and much of one night). The moment I finished book 1, I purchased book 2. I've just finished that one and I'm so disappointed to find that book 3 isn't expected until fall.

I prefer to write reviews that give little story information. I'll just say that this is one of the best post-crisis stories that I've lucked into in a long time. Great narrative, premise, characters, and language. Professional quality writing all around. I especially like the start of each chapter, each time an excerpt from a gathered history, from survivors, of the struggle to keep civilization going after ten years of The Flu.

I've read so much in this genre and I don't feel motivated to write reviews that often. I give the Changed World an unreserved five stars. I plan to recommend it to lots of my friends.
