About the Author
Simha R. Magal, Ph.D. is Professor of Management (MIS) and Director, ERP initiative, in the Seidman College of Business, Grand Valley State University, Michigan.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.  His primary research interests include e-business and enterprise systems.  His articles have appeared in such publications as MIS Quarterly, Journal of MIS, and Information and Management, among others.  He is Editor of AISWorld Net  aisworld.org and has served on the editorial boards of several journals.  He served as co-chair of the inaugural conference of the Midwest Association for Information Systems (MWAIS) in 2006 and as the president of MWAIS during 2008-2009.

Jeffrey Word, Ph.D., is vice president of product strategy at SAP AG. He is responsible for defining SAP's future product strategy and for fostering product innovation within SAP. Dr. Word has worked for several Global 1000 companies in the high-tech industry for nearly 20 years, specializing in business and IT strategy. At SAP, he has driven the evolution of the company's enterprise technology strategy, with a special focus on corporate process improvement initiatives and services-based IT architecture design. Dr. Word earned his Ph.D. in information systems at Manchester Business School in England.

Learn ERP by focusing on underlying processes

This book does an excellent job presenting how companies can effectively use ERP by focusing on common business processes: procurement, production, and fulfillment. The books makes a clear and succinct presentation of how functional areas of an organization interact through triggers created by various types of documents within these processes. Not only are these documents discussed, but facsimiles of document 'hard copies' are presented so that readers can see the paper equivalents of documents that are increasingly electronic only. Because of the clarity of the presentation, regardless of one's background knowledge of business processes, the material is easy to understand yet not written in a way that would seem simplistic to a knowledgeable reader.

When used as a textbook, the book has a number of very positive features. The chapters are short, so students don't get overwhelmed with content. The document illustrations mentioned previously are very well done. Key terms are highlighted and well defined in the text. Supporting stories and examples are used, but not to excess. I have found the book better than books that are much longer because of its focus on keeping things simple. Students like the book as well, which is rare for most textbooks.

For classes where students are introduced to ERP for the first time (particularly SAP ERP), I believe this is the best book on the market at this time. For professionals and others unfamiliar with ERP but wanting to get a sense of what it is, how it works, and what its benefit is to an organization, this book is well worth the read and a fraction of the cost you'd pay for other books.

Excellent ERP SAP Book

Magal and Word have written a unique book about integrated business processes that combines reading with hands-on practice. The on-line exercises from WileyPLUS complement the book and offer a way to practice the concepts presented in their book. Although the book supports SAP it is a good starting point to understanding the basic concepts of any integrated system and the possible process improvements that can be achieved.

About the Author
About the author STANLEY I. SANDLER is the H. B. du Pont Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware as well as professor of chemistry and biochemistry. He is also the founding director of its Center for Molecular and Engineering Thermodynamics. In addition to this book, Sandler is the author of 235 research papers and a monograph, and is the editor of a book on thermodynamic modeling and five conference proceedings. He earned the B.Ch.E. degree in 1962 from the City College of New York, and the Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1966.

What a major improvement and enlargement of the second edition is this third, new edition! I am stunned. It is ultramodern, even more complete, clearer, highly illustrated, better structured, contains any detail to be imagined with an incredible exactitud. A real textbook that you will use lifetime long to lookup and clear up any problems or questions. I have compared all existing textbooks in different languages incl. German covering Chemical Thermodynamics for Engineers. None reaches the complexity, exactness, clearity and completeness of this outstanding, immense work. Modern, very modern, useful and just beautiful. Nothing seems to be similar to the second edition, but everything new, modern and fully revised and updated. What can I say? This is definitely one of the must haves among Chemical Engineering textbooks, including works by John C. Slattery, Scott H.Fogler and Byron B. Bird. It is more than worth it investing in this book even if you are already in possession of an obsolete second edition.

I personally find it very difficult to review this book. The subject matter is particularly hard; thus it could be the case that my inability to grasp the material might render me incapable of a sound judgment of the quality of the book.

Prof. Sandler however managed to avoid the indulgence of deluging the book with non-SI units, a certain pitfall many authors fell victim to in their endeavor to expose students to the real-world situations where units don't come nicely in meters and Kelvins. Well, as they say, the road to thermodynamic hell is paved with good intentions.
The derivation of the equations are sufficiently rigorous, and the algebra can be dauntingly so. As someone who appreciates mathematical formalism and rigor, I should find the course satisfying this [interest] of mine. Events did not turn out that way however; when the conceptually simple but algebraically tedious calculation is repeated over and over again with different variables (eg calculating the partial molar property of G, then for H, then for S, etc) one easily becomes stultified; the mind thenceforth approaches the book merely as an exercise in clever manipulation of mathematical symbols. This is most probably not a particular "fault" of this book, but the field itself.
The book took an axiomatic development of thermodynamics; some historical snippets are inserted to help the intuition whenever necessary.
Much to the wisdom of Prof. Sandler, his examples are clear and illustrative of the underlying concept he wishes to clarify; again here he managed to avoid the all-too-common indulgence in "cute" story problems (eg "Your uncle's friend Fred has opened a plant ...") that in some books may span two annoyingly long paragraphs. (I have actually sit for a 50-minute exam where students were expected to extract vital informations from such vague story problems. As expected, the students did not find them funny.)
The last complaint I have for this book is the apparent lack of numerical answers at the back. At least numerical answers would help one check whether the solution worked out is reasonable. I know students who have become frustrated by this absence. The psychological effect is apparent: students, especially those motivated by instant gratification, simply refused to do the work reasoning that it is useless to labor on something without at least having the comforting feeling that one is nearing the answer at each step.

Just the tips..

With nearly 9% unemployment there is a tremendous amount of competition in the marketplace for open positions. Sometimes the smallest factors can get a candidate hired.. or passed up for a great job. Having worked as an executive recruiter for 6yrs I can't stress enough the importance of interview fundamentals, be it the proper format and content of a resume, attire for an interview, company due diligence, demeanor, posture or even hygiene. Ryan through his show and now this book does a fantastic job of identifying key points all interviewees should be aware of. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to start their career but also to those looking for a comprehensive review and recap of information they are aware of.

It was refreshing to get a real world perspective on what I should be doing during my job search. The resume writing and interviewing skills I received from my academic advisers was very stale and generic and didn't really relate to the career field I'm looking in. It was incredibly helpful to receive guidance on MY career goals from an "outside the box" expert!
