Small, but powerful

This small paperback book is powerful. Hurnard provides the reader with a different perspective about intercessory prayer. I have read it once, and now I am going back through it to recapture the points that jumped out to me. It shows how literary representations of Anne Frank in America over the past 50 years reflect the continued dominance of the American dramatic adaptations of Frank’s Diary in the 1950s, and argues that authors feel compelled to engage with the problematic elements of these adaptations and their iconic power. At the same time, though, literary representations of Frank are associated with the adaptations; critics often assume that these texts unquestioningly perpetuate the problems with the adaptations. This is not true. This book examines how American authors represent Frank in order to negotiate difficult questions relating to representation of the Holocaust in America, and in order to consider gender, coming of age, and forms of inequality in American culture in various historical moments; and of course, to consider the ways Frank herself is represented in America. This book argues that the most compelling representations of Frank in American literature are alert to their own limitations, and may caution against making Frank a universal symbol of goodness or setting up too easy identifications with her. It will be of great interest to researchers and students of Frank, the Holocaust in American fiction and culture, gender studies, life writing, young adult fiction, and ethics.

A great textbook for DEA

I have several books on DEA. This is the best text book for DEA. The models are well explained and I was able to learn the basic DEA models and their advances by myself. The spreadsheet modeling part is also very useful -- I can build and solve the models. If you are new to DEA, this is definitely the book you want to have.

This timely book both world experts in the field of DEA examines the latest and up to date techniques in this area in terms of measuring productivity. This book should be on the bookshelves of everyone in a position to examine the productivity of their organizations especially in today's environment.

Useful, but contains many typos

The book is useful for explaining how to enter models into Excel's Solver. Although apparently easy for non-mathematicians, it omits explanations of many terms (e.g. "the non-Archimedian e" on page 61). Several errors (typos) in the text and formulas made me wonder if they were in a rush to get this printed (e.g. the two last lines on page 53, the random "Mitsubishi" on page 41, the formulas for cell D22 on pages 41 and 65, and several others). The link they provide to the book's Excel files is a bad link.

Broken Treaties is a comparative assessment of Indian treaty negotiation and implementation focusing on the first decade following the United States–Lakota Treaty of 1868 and Treaty Six between Canada and the Plains Cree (1876). Jill St. Germain argues that the “broken treaties” label imposed by nineteenth-century observers and perpetuated in the historical literature has obscured the implementation experience of both Native and non-Native participants and distorted our understanding of the relationships between them. As a result, historians have ignored the role of the Treaty of 1868 as the instrument through which the United States and the Lakotas mediated the cultural divide separating them in the period between 1868 and 1875. In discounting the treaty historians have also failed to appreciate the broader context of U.S. politics, which undermined a treaty solution to the Black Hills crisis in 1876. In Canada, on the other hand, the “broken treaties” tradition has obscured the distinctly different understanding of Treaty Six held by Canada and the Plains Cree. The inability of either party to appreciate the other’s position fostered the damaging misunderstanding that culminated in the Northwest Rebellion of 1885. In the first critical assessment of the implementation of these treaties, Broken Treaties restores Indian treaties to a central position in the investigation of Native–non-Native relations in the United States and Canada.
