Incredible, amazing real-life journey through a beefed up world

I first read an excerpt of this book in the magazine section of a newspaper while visiting England years ago. After that I was looking for the book to come out in the U.S.. When I didn't see it, I ordered it through Amazon. I loved this book. I am a woman, I have no muscles to speak of, and I had no interest in bodybuilding. But Hotten makes the "sport" of growing muscles come alive, and tells the incredible story of these guys getting big, bigger, biggest. What they do to succeed: be it drugs or incredible devotion or usually, a crazy combination of both -- is painted in a way to make it truly fascinating and touching.

Sometimes it's darkly funny (like the fake tan application scenes and dehydrated competitors who actually freeze up and have to be moved off stage like statues) and sometimes tragic (the ones who are permanently injured or die from their pursuit of "perfection"). It also paints a interesting portrait of Schwarzenegger and who he is, where he came from and how many have strived to follow in his footsteps. It's just a great, well-written book for any fan of modern non-fiction.

The bodybuilding scene from another perspective....

Good reading about the bodybuilding scene and history. However it spends far too much time going over the life of Arnold S. and not enough on any of the other colourful characters (that the book admits are colourful) from the top professional bodybuilders. It does tell a bit about how Arnold "really" got his start and it is far less glamorous than what we have usually been told ie....he had LOTS of help from generous people who made sacrifices on his behalf. You will like this book especially if you are a weight trainer or bodybuilder.

Pretty good about bodybuilding

It was a good book with a lot of good stories about some of the top bodybuilders around. There were some that were included and some were neglected. It could have been a little more thorough, but it was still a good read. I enjoyed it immensely!

Well balanced views on smoothies and weight loss

What struck me most is the well balanced views on Smoothies in this book. I especially appreciate the fact that Ms Lenhart gives the "whys" and "hows" instead of just a list of smoothie recipes. Knowing the reason 'why' is a powerful factor to motivate one to persevere.

Here's a quote from the book - "The most important factor here is that you work to fit smoothies into YOUR routine. It's not about all or nothing here. It's about making smart and sustainable health choices to help you lose weight, gain energy ..."

I like the part about fitting smoothies into MY routine, instead of changing my routine to fit the diet. Thumbs up!

A great book on the fundamentals of Smoothies, from the good and bad myths of smoothies, (they are not all good), to some delicious smoothie recipes for weight loss, more energy and more.
A well laid out book that will be great for people who are not clued up on smoothies, all in all a great little book, and to top it off, the recipes taste good too.

Stephen C. Harper, Ph.D., is an entrepreneur, consultant, speaker, award-winning educator, and best-selling author. His books on entrepreneurship and leadership include: Taking Your Business to the Next Level and Beyond! (2012), The Ever-Evolving Enterprise (2011), Extraordinary Entrepreneurship (2004), The McGraw-Hill Guide To Starting Your Own Business (2003) - a national bestseller - that includes a Chinese edition, The Forward-Focused Organization (2001), The McGraw-Hill Guide To Managing Growth In Your Emerging Business, (1995), and Management: Who Ever Said It Would Be Easy? (Editor and co-author, 1983). His latest book, Here's to the Crazy Entrepreneurs: Is Entrepreneurism a Mental Disorder? (2013) takes the reader inside the mindset of real entrepreneurs who change the way we live and work. It poses the question, "Are entrepreneurs the crazy ones or are the people who do not have the guts to leave their comfort zones to start ventures actually the crazy ones?" Steve has been on the faculty at Arizona State University where he earned his doctorate, Duke University – as a Visiting Professor of Entrepreneurship in its Executive MBA program, and The University of North Carolina Wilmington – where he is the Progress Energy/Betty Cameron Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship. Steve is the recipient of numerous awards including: The University of North Carolina Board of Governors' Award for Teaching Excellence. He has also received the Chairman’s Service Award by the Council for Entrepreneurial Development and been recognized for outstanding service by the U.S. Small Business Administration for establishing and being the Director of UNCW’s Small Business Institute for twenty years. Steve was President of Harper and Associates Inc. a business consulting firm, from 1976 through 2009. He has also been the co-founder and President of numerous economic development organizations. He has also served on the board of directors for numerous organizations. Steve has conducted hundreds of seminars on strategic thinking, breakthrough leadership, corporate entrepreneurship, and the management of change for corporations and not-for-profit enterprises. He has also made presentations at more than one hundred professional associations and been a speaker for Inc. Resources.

Here's to the Crazy Entrepreneurs

In this latest of his books about various aspects of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Harper offers up some entertaining and important ideas about the non-typical mental DNA of entrepreneurs. He blends his attention grabbing, tongue-in-cheek humor about "crazy entrepreneurs" with some sharp insights into the profile of those who defy conventional dogma while pursuing their vision of a disruptive product or new services offering. As for the case Dr. Harper makes about "entrepreneurism as a mental disorder"...I resemble those remarks! As do so many of the people I've admired and learned from throughout my long business career. If you want to be an entrepreneur, or want to understand why you or a loved one are chronically afflicted with the pursuit of "just one more startup", then this book is for you!
