YOU WON'T GET BURNED BUYING "PEARLS GETS SACRIFICE"!

They may burn Stephan Pastis at the stake, but they'll never kill PEARLS BEFORE SWINE! This treasury, with commentary by Stephan Pastis, solidifies why this comic is the funniest strip today. The well-known cast of characters delivers day-after-day some of the most creative comedy in the genre. If only a fourth of the comics in newspapers were half as funny as PEARLS, the industry would be thriving. Thank goodness these comics are also available in these books. They will live on forever because brilliant comedy never dies. This one is terrific.

Pearls continues to deliver great humor, more puns

My favorite thing about the Pearls treasuries are the comments Stephan Pastis writes beneath most strips. Most treasuries are just the last two smaller collections stapled together, printed on a larger page, and cranked out to increase revenue without giving a reader anything new. Don't get me wrong, I don't fault anyone for this fact. I'm just noting that Pastis really puts something special in for the reader in his treasuries, even if it's a drawing of a cruise ship he did thirty years ago.

Pastis gives insight into the modes of his disturbed thinking and hilarious results. He gives random, funny points that feel genuine and enjoyable. What his comments note most is that he is human. He concedes some of his strips are weak, and others plain pathetic. While I would not call any of his remarks profound, they add value to his work. There's a lot that goes into a comic strip that most people are finished with in under a minute. his treasuries give a peak into the process, which can actually make the reader appreciate more of the god-awful puns Pastis slops onto his panels.

The humor is fantastic, and pretty much what Pearls fans should expect. It's got vulgarity, drinking and violence. It pushes the envelope and offends too many. That is why this strip is needed. It's not vanilla. Its got heart and substance. Sure, there are more than a couple of strips that don't work, but they are buried amongst quality humor. Pearls Before Swine is not my favorite comic strip, but I can only reread Far Side so many times. Pastis is continuing to introduce something new to the comics, trying out new ideas and delivering something unique. In a world with so many overly-sensitive whiners, this strip unabashedly pokes fun at them, itself, and pretty much everything else. Almost no one is safe. Thank goodness.

When all else fails, kill cute things!

There are not that many comics out there these days that are truly funny. So many of the older strips are reruns from decades ago, or their authors retired far too early (you know who I am talking about!), and many of the current ones are just... not... funny... This one however, is my favorite strip out of the current market. I LOVE Mr. Pastis' treasuries, because he comments throughout and it is fascinating to see a little of how his mind works. I own all of his books and can hardly wait for the new ones to come out. Thank you Stephan Pastis!

Like Bruce Campbell and Elizabeth Lack's A Dictionary of Birds ( LJ 7/85), The Encyclopedia of Birds is superbly written, edited, and illustrated. Many of the same authors have written on the same subjects in both books. An important difference is that the Dictionary is arranged alphabetically, while the Encyclopedia is organized by taxonomic order. The Encyclopedia contains an index, but due to the sometimes confusing classification of birds, its format may still make it difficult to use. In addition, the Dictionary is more detailed and extensive, and includes references at the end of long definitions. But the Encyclopedia 's large color photographs, which are often strikingly beautiful, will be useful to both amateurs and professionals. While the Dictionary is a necessity for most academic libraries, both books are highly recommended to public libraries with large reference collections. Nicholas J. This book is just what it says, an encyclopedia. I should have read up more on this book before I bought it. It is a good book, but not what I was looking for. Lot of reading and about birds all over the world. I was looking to identify birds around our area.

If Bird Watching Simply Isn't Enough For You

The problem with birding books is that they mostly just tell you what a given bird looks like. If your curiosity about feathered creatures goes beyond just appearances here is the book for you. It's a big, 450-page book that is packed with information. This is not just a big picture book, though it is full of beautiful color shots. It's mainly a reference book that describes, by species, birds' lives in detail, covering such topics as mating, nesting, communication, feeding, and socialization. There are many fascinating sidebars, such as the one describing why owls have such broad heads, and the one on the Hoatzin chick's claws on its wings that enable it to climb around trees while still an infant. There is excellent material on how various birds have developed features that have enabled them to adapt to their environment - probably the best know example being the beaks of finches.
And, best of all, this encyclopedia is interestingly written. It's informative, but not drearily academic. It's one of those books that you can just open up to any page and find yourself reading something truly fascinating about birds. Highly recommended.

Poorly organized.

There is a great deal of fascinating, and very useful information here, and if the writing style is a bit didactic, it's hardly soporific. Still, it would seem to me that an "encyclopedia" should be organized in some way (preferably alphabetically) that is comprehensible to the layman. Granted, there's a fairly good index that allows one to find the entry that one is looking for, but the book as a whole is apparently organized by order and suborder, which makes it impossible for the layman to pick up the book and find a given entry in a reasonable amount of time. This strikes me as a fairly serious flaw. For example, we start with ostriches, rheas, emus and cassowaries, progress through kiwis and tinamous, progress to penguins, loons, and grebes; hummingbirds are roughly halfway through the book, and we finish with crows. Jays have no entry of their own, but are lumped with crows, as sparrows are lumped with buntings, tanagers, waxbirds and weavers. It's very difficult to find the method to this madness.
Granted, three stars is a bit low for this book, but four would have been too high.
If you need a reference book on birds that has a lot of information, and are willing to spend the time sorting through the incomprehensible organization to find that information, this is an excellent choice, but if you want a quick "field guide" that not only gives good information but that is easy to use, this would be a bad choice.
