This book is intended as a comprehensive introduction to symbolic logic. It presupposes no prior acquaintance with either logic or mathematics, and it includes all the standard topics through relational predicate logic with identity. The book was written in the conviction that any student can master symbolic logic, and it is designed to give the student as much help as possible in attaining that mastery.

The main part of the book is divided into twenty units, each of which has an introduction and a statement of study objectives so that the student has an overview of what is to come and knows exactly what is required in order to master the unit. The explanatory material for each unit is divided into several subsections, each of which has a specific function and covers one relatively small, clearly defined topic. The clear separation of topics and the division into easily comprehended small "bites" allow the student to master the material step by step without being overwhelmed by an indigestible mass of information.

One-variable predicate logic is developed, in detail, independently of relational predicate logic, and identity is presented in two separate units. The semantics of predicate logic is also developed in a separate unit, as is the semantics for sentential logic. In addition to the basic material, there are several "extra credit" units, which provide a glimpse into alternative methods of logic and more advanced topics.

I have tried to give as detailed explanations as possible, both for specific techniques, such as drawing up truth tables or constructing proofs, and for the rationale behind these techniques. It seems to me as important for a student to understand why things are done in a certain way as to learn the techniques themselves, and in this book I have tried to supply the "why's" as well as the "how's."

The book does, however, supply the "how's" in abundance. Aside from the detailed explanations, there are numerous examples worked out in the text: various types of truth tables, a great many detailed, step-by-step symbolizations, and over fifty fully worked out proofs. In addition, there are copious exercises, with answers to fully half of these provided at the back of the book. Problems for which answers are given are indicated by stars.

Because of the detailed explanations, the extensive coverage, and the clear division of topics, the book is extremely flexible. It can be used in either freshman courses or upper-division courses and is suitable for quarter, semester, or even two-quarter courses. In one quarter, for instance, one might cover just Units 1 through 14; in a semester course, Units 1 through 15, 17, and 18; and in a two-quarter course one might cover the entire book, including the supplementary units. Because of the step-by-step approach and the numerous examples and exercises, the book can also be used in self-paced classes. Suggestions on how to structure such a course are included in the Instructor's Manual.

A new edition has given me the opportunity to make numerous changes that should clarify and streamline the presentation. In addition to updating examples and exercises, I have provided new or expanded explanations for many topics that students might find puzzling and have made scores of relatively minor changes that significantly clarify the material. The most substantial changes are in sections covering logical form and the distinction between form and substitution instance. I have also expanded and clarified various examples and problems in the text and have added new exercises in Unit 19.

It is a great pleasure to acknowledge at this point my considerable debt to the many people who helped make this book what it is. My greatest debt, both in general and in particular, is to Nuel D. Belnap, Jr., from whom I absorbed most of what I know about logic and much of my interest in pedagogy. In addition to these general contributions, the rule system for predicate logic is a slightly modified version of one of his systems. He also read the initial version of the entire manuscript and made numerous valuable suggestions, most of which have been incorporated here. Without him the book would not have been written, and without his astute commentary it would not have been as useful as I hope it will be.

Excellent textbook

I really like this book. It's an excellent undergraduate introduction to logic for non-mathematicians. It's not dumbed down in any way. It's rigorous. The exercises are challenging and plentiful. Most importantly, it explains the basic concepts and tools of symbolic logic in a clear, unpretentious manner. (The 5th edition corrects the mistakes of the 4th.)

By comparison, Copi seems unfocused and flabby; Bergmann & Moor comes off as unnecessarily muscular given the level of the material.

Virginia Klenk Can You Say Paperback?

I won't bother going into any detail regarding the usefulness of this text, as it has proven to be one of the most reslient of its kind in any field of academics. It allows a student, unfamiliar with the discipline of symbolic logic, to ease in to study like an old man into a warm bath. The trouble is, I would not want to be charged with the task of how much EXCESS money is spent, year in, year out, by the student on this text. This has little to do with the text itself, but mainly with the manner in which it is bound. How or why, after so many years of availability, this text is not available to the student in softcover, wreaks of shameless profiteering. While examples of this nature abound in the world of academic textbooks, Klenk's 'Understanding Symbolic Logic' provides one of the more glaringly obvious examples of how the 'textbook industry' pays no heed to the concern of the individual student, regarding them rather as consumers and statistics, symbols if you will. While this does not defy capitalist logic, it does defy any modicum of human decency.

Better than most logic books out there!

After attempting an intro to symbolic logic course using the text, "The Logic Book", this other text "Understanding Symbolic Logic" was a godsend! It is very useful and easily understood. I really hope that professors require this as the primary text for their course. Perhaps, if this book is used rather than "The Logic Book", then maybe students will actually pass the course!!!!

Technology is everywhere, yet a theory of technology and its social dimension remains to be fully developed. Building on the influential book The Social Construction of Technological Systems, this volume carries forward the project of creating a theory of technological development and implementation that is strongly grounded in both sociology and history. The 12 essays address the central question of how technologies become stabilized, how they attain a final form and use that is generally accepted. The essays are tied together by a general introduction, part introductions, and a theoretical conclusion.

The first part of the book examines and criticizes the idea that technologies have common life cycles; three case studies cover the history of a successful but never produced British jet fighter, the manipulation of patents by a French R&D company to gain a market foothold, and the managed development of high-intensity fluorescent lighting to serve the interests of electricity suppliers as well as the producing company.

The second part looks at broader interactions shaping technology and its social context: the question of who was to define "steel," the determination of what constitutes radioactive waste and its proper disposal, and the social construction of motion pictures as exemplified by Thomas Edison's successful development of the medium and its commercial failure.

The last part offers theoretical studies suggesting alternative approaches to sociotechnologies; two studies argue for a strong sociotechnology in which artifact and social context are viewed as a single seamless web, while the third looks at the ways in which a social program is a technology.

A true classic

I loved the heroine. Smart, clumsy and adorable. There were a few laugh out loud moments in the book. It's wonderful to read a romance that has all the right elements put together. A good read!!!!!

Yummy Scientist seeks Goofy Girl!

Keir Traherne was a grumpy scientist buried away in the African jungle for years and years, working on some sort of boring scientific project. The last thing he wanted was a long-legged girl photographer like Poppy mucking about, taking pictures and turning all the boys' heads. But the more firmly Keir tried to put Poppy in her place, the more often they bumped together, rubbing against each other in his jeep or on the jungle trails, arguing and fighting until their lips just kept locking in those long, hot, embarrassing kisses!
If you're the romantic type at all, this is the perfect read for a long hot bath, or when your'e lying in bed with a box of chocolates on a cold rainy night. I loved it!

The Trouble With Love

Coming from any other man it would have been a compliment. Poppy was perfectly aware, however, that Dr. Keir Traherne definitely wasn't flirting with her.

Keir made it clear he wanted no distractions while they worked to save the West African rain forest. And that ws fine with Poppy--she'd been hired as the project's photographer. It was a job that she loved and one that would take all of her time.

But that didn't stop her from wishing she could replace cool, immaculate Astrid, the assistant Keir kept constantly by his side. And it didn't stop Poppy from regreting that Keir thought of her only in terms of trouble!

Great Arduino Hobby Book

This a great book to learn how to use the Arduino board with Arduino protoshields. The protoshields make it much easier to build your circuits and attach them to your Arduino board. You can have different circuits on different shields and then alternate them by just loading the matching software into your Arduino board. This book is geared to show you how to build different circuits rather than how to build software for the circuits.

An Enjoyable Read

After feeling only so-so about Serpent's Kiss, the prequel to this and the second in the Witches of East End series, I went into Winds of Salem not knowing what to expect. However, Winds of Salem managed to restore my love for this series, as it possessed the same charm and witchy goodness that the first one contained.

Winds of Salem picks up a little while after Serpent's Kiss left off. In present day, the Beauchamp family is trying to bring Freya home while dealing with their own wide variety of personal problems, big and small. On the other hand, Freya is back in the 1600s, sent to relive the one thing she'd never thought she have to: the Salem Witch Trials. One of the big problems I had with the second book was the lack of connection I felt to the main characters, but luckily, that problem vanished within this one. I enjoyed how Melissa split the book up into various sections, as it allowed for a well developed sense of what was going on in both worlds and some suspense. In addition, I suddenly seemed to care about the characters once again...something just seemed to click. I particularly enjoyed finding out more about 1600 era Freya as well as seeing more of Freddie who weirdly began to grow on me as the story progressed.

The plot in this was also filled with action and lots of suspense, as mentioned before. I enjoyed seeing more about the Salem Witch Trials. In my opinion, Melissa did a great job of catching the scene and feelings associated with this time, which made the overall reading experience even better. It was also exciting to see what was occurring back in present day, especially when it involved my favorite characters: the pixies. The scenes with them and Freddie were always priceless!

What I liked the most about this book, though, was the ending. Melissa did a great of concluding the major storylines while also leaving room for potential development. In some ways, I really hope she does continue this series.

Sexy, compelling, and magical, Winds of Salem leaves little room for disappointment.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one!

This is the third volume in the Witches of East End series. The passages of time are closed with Freya Beauchamp stuck in 1692 with no way to get back. Freya must relive the horror of the Salem witch trials while her parents frantically try to reopen the passages and rescue her. If they don't succeed, Freya's life will be forfeited forever. Being immortal will not help her this time and she'll never be reborn again.

This story opens in 1692 and I was immediately pulled into the story. I loved Freya's character as we're given a glimpse of what life in Puritan Salem was like for young maids. Back in present time, Freya's parents are frantically trying to find a way to save her along with her sister Ingrid, the local librarian, who is reading every account of the period she can find. The author does a great job of flipping between present day and 1692 to keep the action moving. I was happy to see more of Ingrid as she tries to navigate loving a mortal man. Will Joanna and Norman find a way to reopen the passages and save their daughter? And what's going on with her twin Freddie? He's searching for his Trident and embarks on a perilous journey of his own. Everything is connected in this wonderful magical journey. It's my favorite book so far, but I would recommend that you read books 1 and 2 to get the full flavor of the Beauchamp family. Recommended.

Excellent story.

A reset of the hero/doing your job argument. The main character shows calm under pressure, extreme focus on the task and complete knowledge of the solution. She is given the supreme compliment of being "competent". Each book in the Kinsella Universe stands on its own, but they add texture to the story that makes the entire universe sparkle.

The Rescue Branch is the second in the Kinsella series. This provides a look at the beginning of space travel by the human race and the problems encountered. For those of us who cut our teeth on Heinlein and Asimov, this is an awakening to some of the real problems of space flight and scooting around the solar system.

This book provides a good basis for the importance of competency in those who work in space. Most of us work where competency is sometimes rewarded and the incompetent stumble along until they run into the "Peter Principle". Few people today work where incompetency equals death.

The action moves in the two parts of this book. There are a few spots that drag when the author becomes to philosophical, but overall it's hard to put it down. Ms. Wylie has done another excellent book.

Heinlein-Style Sci-Fi

All of the Kinsella universe books are high-action, fast-paced stories with interesting characters. Gina Marie Wylie's plots, characters, and dialogue are reminiscent of Heinlein. Although there are times when the über-brilliance of the über-brilliant gets a tad annoying, these books are hard to put down. The Kinsella universe is, in itself, fascinating, as is the glimpse of humanity's challenges when space travel is faster than light. Definitely a good read.
