I won't assert that her perspective on political and social events in the region is the "right" one (indeed, there can be no single "right" perspective in such complicated matters), but she recounts her unique personal experience with objectivity and compassion.
Reading this book forced me to reconsider my opinion on such matters as the forming of the state of Israel in 1948, the Six day war in 1967 and of the Camp David accords in 1977. Considering the Jordanian position made me sadly aware of how superficially I understand the complexities of the whole Middle East situation. Queen Noor presents strong arguments for a balanced approach in the Middle East and shows how often we (I) favor Israel (and America's) point of view, unfairly over the Arab approach.

Next to the political views there is a lot of attention for her personal life. I had the feeling she really tones down her feelings of unhappiness and frustration there. Hussein cannot have been an easy man to live with, and he was very lucky to have Noor's loyalty.

Seeing the world through another eyes. That’s what reading the book was for me. I was fascinated to read Queen Noor Al Hussein's (whose name was given to her by her husband when they married - it means "light of Hussein" but she is born and raised in the United States as Lisa Halaby) account of her 20 year marriage, which spanned two decades of turmoil in the Middle East. And I was touched by the way she describes the last months with Hussein and their struggle with his cancer.

I had taken a leap of faith, and faith has richly reward me.

Invaluable resource for nonprofit board members, fundraisers and staff. And not just at arts organizations.

I could go on and on about this book, but I will just say that after working as a nonprofit fundraiser for over a decade, and never working in an arts organization until my current organization, I recognized so many pitfalls and opportunities cited in this book in every organization I've worked or volunteered as a board member. Of course, the lessons in the book at particularly pertinent for arts organizations, but the applicability is really for the entire nonprofit sector, in my opinion.

Given the resources, I would hand this book to most CEOs, fundraisers, and board members I know. I plan to give out as many as I can afford. And as a fairly voracious reader, I can certainly say that is the first book I've ever described in that way, fiction or nonfiction.

Good info but repetitive

I think this book has a lot of good information in it, but it's repetitive. The first two chapters get redundant and then the chapter about "Implementing the Cycle" basically repeats everything you read previously. This book could have been a lot shorter.

Well-written practical recommendations that are equally useful for the uninitiated in the performing arts programming and the connoisseurs. It gives structure to the approach to managing the arts. The years of experience come through clearly in this book. Thank you for sharing Mr Kaiser.

How to draw an owl! Step 1: Draw a circle. Step 2: Draw the rest of the owl.

Not even remotely for the "absolute beginner". The book starts off by immediately jumping into determining light values in different forms. What? I haven't even drawn a square yet, and you're asking me to shade a coffee mug in different forms with almost no instruction?

The book is broken into mini examples that you are supposed to mimic, however even the very first example require previous drawing knowledge and experience.

But rather than talk about it, I've attached a photo of the steps 3 and 4 (out of 4 total steps, although step 1 technically isn't a step) of the 5th mini example (out of like 30) you are supposed to follow.

NOT for beginners!!!

Even an intermediate student, in an art class, would struggle with this text. You are not given clear instructions, you are just given expertly rendered pictures that if you are a beginner you have no chance at all of duplicating. I should have known it was a loser when it started out teaching you to draw a coffee cup without telling you you should have a coffee cup in front of you to draw. You were meant to just follow their exceedingly difficult instructions that leave you frustrated, demoralized, and ready to put down your pencil forever. Shame on these people for putting this book out, just to make themselves feel like hot shot artists and leave the rest of us in the dust. I'm an absolute beginner, I believe I can learn to draw, but not with this poorly done book. To say it is for absolute beginners and the title is misleading to the point of being false advertising. I feel cheated. These people are dishonest. I wish them well in their Rembrandt quality art that no beginner has a prayer of duplicating.

Excellent for anyone interested in learning to draw

Excellent for anyone interested in learning to draw. It tells you what pencils to use for each project and even how to hold the pencil. There are great illustrations that start with a simple straight line and circle and end up being a horse, cow, cat or dog. There are landscapes with detailed instructions. I have been sketching about 3 weeks with no known talent in art and have been so surprised at what I have been able to produce. Provides fun and is a great stress reducer.

The author has described in a very clear, funny and simple way how we are and how we relate to each other. What I liked the most is that each character reminded me of someone I know or even myself at times. It is really easy to imagine how each character would look like in the real world. This was a very enjoyable read. I imagine Act 2 will be pretty intense and chaotic when performed live.

A deep and beautiful commentary

Aviva Gottlieb Zornberg is one of the remarkable Torah teachers of her generation. All who have attended her lectures in Jerusalem can attest to her great learning, her poetic and intuitive interpretative skill, her effort to read the Biblical text through combining the traditional sources with insights derived from sociological, anthropological and psychological literature. Her radiant and magnetic personality provide a dimension to her lectures inspirationally which the page does, and sometimes does not capture. But her commentary for any one who will take the time and effort to read it carefully yields new insights into the Biblical texts. And again her readings are ones which almost invariably lead us into deeper understanding of the human relationships involved in Tannach.

This commentary should be a part of the library of all those who love the Biblical text.

literary and traditional theological theory meet

Zornberg's "dialectical" approach to discussing the weekly readings of Genesis marries the secular approaches of literature and philosophy and traditional Jewish "learning" in an exciting and thought-provoking way. She uses rabbinic exegesis smartly and sensitively to explore the layers of the text's meaning in a way that will appeal to rather than repel scholars of modern literature who are also theologically inclined. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in Hebrew Bible scholarship.

Aviva Zornberg: An Eclectic Biblical Commentary

Aviva Zornberg's , Genesis, The Beginning of Desire, is a deep analysis of the first book of the Bible which utilizes insights from the full gamut of philosophers and authors to illuminate the commentary of Rashi, the most central of the classical medieval Jewish commentaries on the Bible. She is a treasure and her insights are illuminating and occasionally open up an area in ways never before explored. I reccommend it highly for all who are dedicated to seeing the world of the Bible in all its depth and compexity.
